Focusing on childhood and adolescence, this subject examines human development. Teacher Education Students will engage with theories and research into the spiritual, physical, cognitive, moral, emotional and social aspects of development from childhood through to adolescence.  They will analyse factors that influence development and implications for educational practice. The role of family and cultural child rearing practices, as well as the impact of legislation and social policy on these for a range of school contexts will be examined.

Unit Content

Curriculum Objective

Focusing on childhood and adolescence, this subject examines human development. Teacher Education Students will engage with theories and research into the spiritual, physical, cognitive, moral, emotional and social aspects of development from childhood through to adolescence.  They will analyse factors that influence development and implications for educational practice. The role of family and cultural child rearing practices, as well as the impact of legislation and social policy on these for a range of school contexts will be examined.

Outcomes

1. Understand the major developmental and psychosocial focal issues experienced by children and adolescents, including emotional health, identity formation, peer and family relationships; and be able to identify and describe factors that positively and adversely affect development for flourishing.
2. Identify and discuss the significant factors that contribute to or impact a child’s and young person’s optimal spiritual, emotional, mental, spiritual and physical wellbeing; how is well-being fostered within Christian and alternate school contexts.
3. Analyse key problems encountered by children and adolescents in contemporary society and discuss approaches to responding constructively to these problems with students with reference to the classroom;
4. Demonstrate the importance of understanding and responding well to diverse childhood and adolescent developmental experiences, to establish intentional educational classroom strategies, from Christian and alternate worldviews.
