Unit Content
Outcomes
- Demonstrate a sound understanding of Australia’s migration, political and social services history, including power bases and racism and their impact on the shaping of our nation;
- Examine key characteristics of Indigenous Australian cultures and their associated world-views, values and practices, with a special focus and respect for Indigenous kinship and family values and child- rearing practices;
- Be pastorally mindful of culturally sensitive practices and of key organisations that support Indigenous groups in Australia;
- Explain the importance of language/cultural barriers and the need to work with interpreters and/or bicultural workers.
Subject Content
- Pre-colonisation life: social and political structures, religious beliefs, land management
- Colonisation and its impacts: resistance, conciliation, protection, segregation, assimilation
- Competing historiographies
- Current issues: contemporary Indigenous cultures, socio-economic factors, disadvantage, racism, child welfare, health and education, self-determination, achievement
- Current best practice for working with Indigenous individuals, families, groups and community (includes patterns and provision of services)
- Field trips/guest presenters
