A Pentecostal Voice on the World Stage

Rev Professor Jacqueline Grey is a globally recognised biblical scholar and Pentecostal theologian who has been a faculty member at AC for over 20 years. Her standing in her field has led to her appointment as the global Pentecostal representative on the Faith and Order Commission of the World Council of Churches.

The World Council of Churches is a fellowship of churches from around the world, representing over half a billion Christians. The Faith and Order Commission exists for the global church to grow in unity by bringing together theologians from “diverse church traditions and cultural backgrounds to collaborate and explore theological issues.”[1] Professor Grey’s appointment to this commission acknowledges her as one of the world’s leading Pentecostal thinkers.

At the most recent meeting of the Faith and Order Commission in Egypt, Professor Grey spoke on the topic “Unity: Living and Visible.” In a uniquely Pentecostal way, she reflected on her family’s decision to live together to look after her ageing parents. This inter-generational living experience has informed her thinking about what unity can look like in practice.

Professor Grey challenges the global church to think of unity not only theologically but practically as well. She notes that “we need new ways and new methods of living together in visible unity,” so that “the whole family of God’s household, young and old” can grow together. Such unity would be a witness to those inside and outside the church.
