On Wednesday 28 October, Dr Emma Austin will be launching her new book, Landscapes of Memory: The Old Testament’s Sensory Engagement with Nature, published by IVP Academic with a foreword by Paul H. Wright.
Every page of the Old Testament breathes with the life of God’s creation, from rainbows and desert winds to the roar of a lion and green hills after rain. In Landscapes of Memory, Dr Austin blends biblical scholarship, memory studies, and insights from her own journeys through the lands of the Bible to show how the natural world is key to remembering and engaging the Old Testament in a sensory way. She names this connection between memory, nature and text mnemonature, arguing that the biblical landscape is never mere background, but a dynamic and formative element in the story of faith.
Readers are invited to walk the same paths, breathe the same air, and feel the same seasons that shape the words of the Old Testament: an approach that draws together Old Testament studies, archaeology, Ancient Near Eastern comparative literature, memory studies and spiritual formation.
