Celebrating Our 2026 HDR Graduates

In Sydney this past weekend, AC gathered to celebrate a remarkable milestone: the graduation of seven Higher Degree by Research (HDR) scholars. It was a day where years of research was celebrated publicly with family, friends, and colleagues.

A Truly Global Cohort
This year’s graduating class was a vivid reflection of AC’s international heart. Among the seven graduates were four scholars who wrote their doctoral theses in Korean. At the HDR luncheon before the graduation ceremony, Professor Johannes Luetz, Director of Graduate Research, noted the cultural and linguistic richness of the research community.

Seven Contributions to Knowledge
From theological exploration to social inquiry, these seven scholars have pushed the boundaries of what we understand about faith and society. Professor Luetz noted that their work collectively advances Christian thought with an impact that resonates both in Australia and internationally. The seven graduating candidates and their areas of research were as follows:

  • Dr. An Seong Min: Contributed a new vision for how Korean churches in Australia can renew their identity and thrive in a changing, post-Christian society.
  • Dr. Kang Ho Saeng: Offered a fresh understanding of how the identity and work of Christ shapes faith and church life for Korean Christians in Australia.
  • Dr. Kim Young Ock: Explored the heart of the Gospel, showing how the Kingdom of God and the cross belong together in Jesus’ message.
  • Dr. Danielle Terceiro: Researched the intersection of education and art, showing how picture books and graphic novels help children engage with history and moral reflection.
  • Dr. Segun Michael Adegboyega Adelana: Provided new perspectives on how African Pentecostal churches in Australia understand their mission to serve both the church and wider society.
  • Dr. Judith Newton: Developed a new approach to inner healing prayer, focusing on how it supports spiritual well-being and growth from past wounds.
  • Christopher Magnussen: Offered a fresh understanding of how Christian faith remains active and transformative beyond the visible church, shaping broader culture.

Beyond the Title
The journey to a PhD, DMin, or MPhil is never walked alone. The day was as much a “thank you” to the families who endured “academic ramblings over dinner” as it was a celebration of the graduates and their contribution.

Beyond graduation, each of these researchers will carry more than just a new title. They are now part of a global fellowship of scholars, with responsibility for the stewardship of knowledge in their various fields. We congratulate our HDR graduates on their world-class contributions and look forward to seeing how their research will continue to shape our shared future.
