This subject provides an introduction to curriculum, pedagogy and assessment for teaching secondary visual arts and provides an opportunity to understand various theories and evidence-based practices that can inform a visual arts teachers‘ knowledge and pedagogical practice, from a Christian Worldview. The teaching, learning, and assessment provides experience with planning effective strategies for the learning and teaching of art history, art criticism, and artmaking. It equips the TES with teaching methodologies, assessment tools, and practical strategies to effectively teach visual arts, with a specific emphasis on the NESA Visual Arts 7-10 and ACARA The Arts Year 7 – 10 curricula.

Unit Content

Outcomes

1. Demonstrate awareness and initial working knowledge of the structure and content of the Year 7-10 Visual Arts syllabus from NESA or the Australian Curriculum, including Cross-Curriculum Priorities and General Capabilities.
2. Describe relevant educational theories and explain choice of evidence-based approaches for teaching, learning and assessment, and explain the importance of theory and evidence when selecting and adopting teaching approaches from a Christian Worldview.
3. Prepare detailed, engaging, coherent and effective lesson plans and units of work that relate to selected learning outcomes and syllabus or curriculum content, explaining the appropriateness of approaches and resources (including ICT) that link to informed, safe and effective teaching and learning
4. Demonstrate effective, safe, and responsive teaching strategies and classroom management.
5. Demonstrate effective and differentiated practice of formative and summative assessment
6. Apply an understanding of aspects of curriculum differentiation in order to meet the diverse learning needs of cultural backgrounds including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, and a full range of abilities and cultural backgrounds of learners, and to engage students in active learning
