Wellbeing and Care: Health, Safety and Nutrition is designed to develop teacher education students’ understanding of the importance of health, safety and nutrition for learning and development. and to understand issues that are important for the well-being of children both within and outside of the Early Childhood and Primary School education settings. The subject serves to equip beginning teachers to understand their students as people and be pastorally responsive to them so they develop secure and supportive relationships in safe and supportive learning environments. It explores a workable learning environment and classroom routines that maximise learning in Christian or alternate school contexts.

Outcomes

  1. Describe how historical and theoretical perspectives of health, safety, wellbeing and nutrition inform current legislative requirements, government policies and industry standards relevant to children’s health and wellbeing in early childhood education and care settings and schools.
  2. Explain the role that leaders and advocates in a service and teachers in a school context have in ensuring practices and conditions that support the health and wellbeing of children and staff
  3. Identify strategies that support inclusive participation and engagement of children across the full range of abilities, and provide explicit strategies to support students’ wellbeing and safety – legally and educationally – in a range of service/school contexts.
  4. Informed by a holistic approach to the management of health, safety and contemporary issues in the early childhood environment, recognise and reflect on learning opportunities and pedagogical practices that enhance children’s learning and development in the domains of health, nutrition, wellbeing and physical activity.
  5. Illustrate how the relevant legislative, administrative and organisational policies, including codes of ethics and conduct, impact service and school policies and procedures inform learning environments/classroom practice.
  6. Demonstrate knowledge and understandings of practical approaches to managing children, including involving parents/carers, so that learning environments /classrooms are safe and supportive learning environments.
