The aim of this subject is to effectively prepare Tertiary Education Students (TES) to teach reading and writing in Years 3-6. This subject builds on CRS206 Years K-2 Reading and the Landscape of Writing. Texts serve different purposes for a range of audiences and are structured according to that purpose. Language forms and features also support the meaning conveyed to an audience. ACARA reflects the learning progressions from Year 3-6 based on purposeful sequencing of learning expectations. TES will engage in activities to deepen and develop their understanding of the knowledge of teaching reading and writing and their reflexive abilities to analyse and transform this teaching to enhance learning.

Outcomes

1. Analyse the merits of two approaches for supporting the improving of reading and writing for diverse learners in Years 3-6 and a full range of abilities;
2. Discuss the outcomes of the ACARA Curriculum and NESA K-10 English Syllabus and the legislative requirements to meet the specific learning needs of diverse students across a range of abilities;
3. Evaluate chosen texts relevant for teaching effective reading and writing to students in Years 3-6;
4. Critically review the role of research-based evidence related to theories for improvement in reading and writing;
5. Identify a range of teaching strategies and their application in teaching writing in their chosen content areas; addressing relevant syllabus outcomes and assessment;
6. Identify, plan and assess authentic and engaging lesson sequences for a range of abilities that are responsive to the learning needs and strengths of all students, including those from diverse linguistic, cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds.
