Details for EDU534 Literacy and Numeracy in Context

The aim of this unit is to prepare students to effectively teach and integrate literacy and numeracy into their subject area(s). Literacy and numeracy are two of the general capabilities in the Australian Curriculum.

With reference to the NSW K-10 syllabuses & other state and territory syllabi, students will implement teaching strategies and will engage with evidence-based research through various evidenced-based pedagogies.

By analysing the literacy and numeracy demands of their subject(s); and by developing strategies for differentiation across the full range of abilities, students will effectively demonstrate their capabilities.

Pedagogies and theories will be explored considering Christian and alternative worldviews.

Outcomes

  1. Identify, analyse and discuss the requirements and standards of numeracy and literacy as general capabilities in ACARA and NESA (and other syllabi) as well as national and international benchmarking assessments.
  2. Demonstrate subject matter expertise through the explicit teaching of phonemic awareness in reading and the explicit teaching of reading and writing in subjects other than English using a range of strategies.
  3.  Demonstrate subject matter expertise through effective planning and teaching of numeracy including the explicit teaching of mathematics; using a range of strategies including building fluency, understanding, problem solving and reasoning.
  4. Critically analyse the processes of teaching literacy and numeracy including the pedagogy of progressively removing scaffolding as the students become more proficient and incorporate in lesson planning.
  5. Identify the importance of independent problem-solving once a student approaches proficiency in underpinning mathematical concepts within the learning and teaching sequence.
  6. Assess the effectiveness of the Multi-tiered System of Support (MTSS) framework and identify the direct relationship it has to evidence-based teaching practices. Identify how biases and assumptions about diverse groups and worldviews might adversely impact the effectiveness of the MTSS for a specific group.
  7. Assess professional development for ongoing training in literacy and numeracy. Apply the key principles of the teaching code of ethics and work effectively with parents and carers.
