Biography

Johannes M. Luetz (BA/USA, MBA/Germany, PhD/Australia) is Professor of Sustainability and Religion and a social scientist specialising in research that examines ecological concerns from spiritual perspectives. He is Director of Graduate Research and Research Development and Chair of the Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC) at Alphacrucis University College. Raised across Sierra Leone, Switzerland, Germany, and Australia, Johannes has conducted inter-disciplinary humanitarian research spanning science-faith, interfaith, and science-policy interfaces. His work includes Asia-Pacific consultancies ($183,600+), UNFCCC advocacy reports, and a technical evaluation of early warning systems following field testing in 13 countries after the 2011 Horn of Africa food crisis. He has led major international collaborations and advanced research in faith-engaged sustainable development and climate change adaptation. His editorial leadership spans landmark Springer publications such as:

Handbook of Traditional Spirituality and Sustainability (Springer Nature, 2025; forthcoming); Interfaith Engagement Beyond the Divide (Springer Nature, 2023); Handbook on Climate Change Management (Springer Nature, 2021). Launched at UN COP26, it is among the largest non-publicly funded editorial project on climate adaptation to date (229 chapters; 6 volumes; 500+ authors)

Johannes holds appointments as Adjunct Associate Professor in the School of Social Sciences at the University of New South Wales (UNSW Sydney) and Adjunct Professor in the School of Law and Society at the University of the Sunshine Coast (USC Maroochydore). He serves as Deputy Editor of the International Journal of Climate Change Strategies and Management (Emerald), and on the editorial boards of Discover Sustainability (Springer), Christian Higher Education (Routledge), and Humanities & Social Sciences Communications (Nature Portfolio). He is a strong advocate for social justice.
