Details for Professional Experience

This 10-day Professional Experience (PEX) placement is in an early childhood setting in which the Teacher Education Student (TES) will be working with children aged between birth and 35 months. The TES will be required to develop caring attachments with babies and professional relationships with parents and other educators. Additionally, TES will be required to observe babies, plan, and evaluate play-based learning experiences based on their theoretical studies, the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF) and reflect on their developing teaching skills. This placement is done in conjunction with EDU214 Praxis and Pedagogy of Play and aims to provide the TES with the skills to become a pedagogical leader in an early childhood education and care setting.

Outcomes

1. Observe elements of the cultural, community and family contexts of children’s lives and their implications for curriculum and assessment
2. Demonstrate knowledge of the three organizing principles of the EYLF - Being, Belonging and Becoming - for the development of positive and productive early childhood education and care Centre environment.
3. Describe strategies that support children’s wellbeing and safety working within the early childhood setting, programs and legislative requirements.
4. Define a range of intentional teaching practices-including monitoring, planning, and recording that engage children in learning appropriate to their interests, abilities and needs.
5. Demonstrate an understanding of the realities of working in an early childhood setting context.
6. Discriminate by observation and reflection the practices of professional educators.
7. Demonstrate an understanding of the role of the Graduate Teacher Standard Descriptors and relevant learning frameworks in identifying professional learning needs.
8. Support teams’ work within the Centre’s communities of practice.
