In this elective unit students will develop an understanding of trauma and the knowledge and skills necessary for working with those affected by trauma and domestic and family violence. Students will also integrate an understanding of trauma into a self-care plan.

Outcomes

  1. Develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to provide appropriate and ethical  therapeutic responses to those who have survived abuse and/or trauma
  2. Adopt work practices that support interactions with those affected by domestic and family violence
  3. Identify client needs and respond with appropriate care or referral
  4. Integrate understandings of trauma into a self-care plan

Subject Content

  1. The social and political discourse of power and powerlessness and violence and abuse
  2. Discussing a context of a victimising culture and the prevention of abuse
  3. Domestic and family violence care, support and referral skills
  4. Exploring a Christian framework that views the whole person as someone affected by abuse and trauma rather than as a ‘problem'
  5. Explain a Christian framework that identifies and works holistically with the survivor, recognising the purpose defense strategies play in the client’s survival
  6. Recognising defense strategies as symptoms of trauma rather than viewing the symptoms as the problem

This course may be offered in the following formats

  • Intensives + E-learning (online) as follows: 1 x one day Intensives = 6 hours + approx 114 hours additional online lectures, time for research, writing, ancillary activities associated with completion of assigned tasks.

Note: The one -day Intensive is required to complete this unit.
